The Great Icacos Lagoon or Los Gallos Lagoon
The only road into the village of Icacos (closer to Venezuela than it is to San Fernando) passes through a magnificent tidal pond of brackish water, surrounded by the coconut palms of Constance estate. This is part of the Los Blanquizales Lagoon system which may sound greek to anyone who has been educated by our failed system in the last 15 years. This swamp combines fresh and brackish water ecosystems.
In the 1860s, the size of the swamp was vastly reduced by Francois Agostini , owner of Constance Estate who drained significant portions for the cultivation of coconuts. The flora and fauna is diverse. In the lagoon which is inundated at high tide, there can be had tilapia, tarpon and on occasion, the odd catfish…at least one person claimed to have caught a small shark here. The avifauna is rich and includes black-bellied tree ducks, scarlet and white ibises, roseate spoonbills, great white herons, little blue and tricolor herons, and dozens of other species. It is noteworthy that is one of the best preserved mangrove swamps in the island since there is little or no human impact which is the death of the Caroni, Nariva and Oropouche swamps.
